TALES OF THE RADIANT CITADEL

Session 117: The Monument of Fates

1
Haru Wakes Up
Inside the wrecked Elder Brain chamber, a tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) sits up out of a pool of glowing green mucus. He’s dripping and dazed, with a single tiny red “1 HP” heart floating over his head. Looming over him from the shadows is a pale mind flayer (Qardsavu’ox) with little daggers woven into his face tentacles, waving one hand in a friendly, clueless “hi!” Haru’s eyes go huge. He is mid-cast, shooting a glowing starry wisp of light from one hand and throwing up a shimmering golden “Sanctuary” bubble with the other, while Qardsavu’ox’s tentacles drape over him like a confused hug. Purple-green bioluminescent lighting, collapsed brain wreckage in the background.
2
Meet Qardsavu’ox
Close-up “character introduction” shot, like a cartoon title card. The mind flayer Qardsavu’ox stands in the tadpole chamber holding a giant wooden spoon, stirring a bubbling vat of glowing tadpole soup, with a big blank happy smile in his eyes and dagger-tipped tentacles. A floating banner reads “QARDSAVU’OX THE MIND-FLAYER”. Perched on the shoulder of a tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) in the foreground, a small grey rat (12) points at Qardsavu’ox with one paw and gives a deadpan, unimpressed look at the viewer. A tiny thought bubble over the rat says “unspeakably dumb.”
Session 117 3
Looting the Brain Library
A towering biopunk library where the shelves are lined with glowing glass jars, each holding a softly pulsing brain connected by flesh-cables, like a server room made of jellies. A dragonborn with backward bird-legs and cracked bloodshot eyes (Kiet) tiptoes away cradling one brain jar like a stolen cookie jar. A large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven) peers at a rack of high-tech tinfoil-hat helmets with antennas and blinking lights, one balanced on his head. An enormous scarred warrior (Gemnar, glaive, red-stone gauntlet) holds a bubbling flask of acid at arm’s length with a suspicious scowl. Bright neon greens and purples, cartoon sparkle effects.
Session 117 4
Free at Last
The mind flayer slave pens are thrown open. Hairy white ape-like quaggoths, goofy mutant humans with extra eyes and lumpy limbs, and small wobbly troll experiments pour out into the light. Some are joyfully kicking a pile of limp, cartoon-X-eyed mind flayer robes. In front of them, a tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) stands on a crate with his arms spread wide, giving a big speech: “YOU ARE YOUR OWN MASTERS NOW!” The crowd looks back at him with puzzled faces and question marks floating above their heads, a few just starting to smile. Warm hopeful light breaking through the gloom.
Session 117 5
Troll Valhalla
Outside the cave in the clearing radiation storm, an enormous scarred warrior (Gemnar, glaive, red-stone gauntlet) solemnly clashes his glaive against his gauntlet with a big “CLANG!” sound effect over a pile of defeated cartoon mini-trolls. A dragonborn (Kiet, bird-legs, bloodshot eyes) breathes a huge plume of fire onto the pile. Rising out of the smoke, the ghostly shapes of the many-headed troll and its little trolls float upward toward a heavenly golden hall in the clouds, waving goodbye with all their heads. To the side, a large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven) quietly scoops fallen teeth off the ground into a sack. Epic and silly.
Session 117 6
The Bugbear Reincarnation
A magical circle of glowing runes on the cave floor in front of a scorched wall, where the only trace of Sunder is a shadow-shaped silhouette burned into the stone. In the center of the circle, a big hairy bugbear body has just formed, lying limp with its eyes closed. A big floating d100 die showing “47” and a d20 showing “2” spin in the air above it. Floating beside the body, the translucent glowing ghost of the aasimar sorcerer (Sunder) wears golf clothes, a visor, and holds a golf club, and politely waves “no thank you” with one hand. A tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) holds his face in both claws in dismay. A large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven) stands nearby holding open a flat black magical hole (a portable hole) like a picnic blanket, ready to store the body.
Session 117 7
Funeral Beam
A solemn but beautiful scene in the ashen wasteland at dusk. A tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) raises his shield toward the sky as a massive column of golden sunbeam shoots upward from the consecrated ground, lighting the purple clouds. A dragonborn (Kiet, bird-legs, bloodshot eyes) flinches and shields his eyes from the light, then kneels to bury a dagger with a single glowing feather tied to it in a small mound. An enormous scarred warrior (Gemnar, glaive, red-stone gauntlet) gives a stern metal-clashing salute. A large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven) bows his head with a small grey rat (12) on his shoulder, its tiny cap held to its chest. High in the beam of light, a faint smiling outline of the Sunweaver, a being woven from golden threads of sunlight, looks down warmly. Warm golds against deep purple.
Session 117 8
The Monument of Fates
A colossal crystalline, petrified tree hundreds of feet tall rises from the cracked wasteland, every inch glowing with carved words, its upper branches covered in thousands of tiny glowing names. At its base, the party looks up in awe: a tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull), a dragonborn (Kiet, bird-legs, bloodshot eyes), an enormous scarred warrior (Gemnar, glaive, red-stone gauntlet), and a large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven). In front of them, the mind flayer Qardsavu’ox (dagger-tentacles, vacant eyes) reads the text aloud, and glowing words stream off the tree and swirl into the party’s heads. Their skulls are smoking, eyes spinning, with comic “52!” damage numbers popping up. Kiet has a bonus “68!” and is tipping over backward, out cold, with little stars circling his head. Epic scale, purple and cyan glow.
Session 117 9
Visions of the High Master
A swirling psychic vision floats out of the crystal tree like a projected movie. In the center of the vision, a giant 40-foot dragon whose head is fused with a pulsing pink elder brain, tentacles writhing from its skull like a crown, is split down the middle by a jagged lightning crack. One half is a roaring dragon, the other half a smug elder brain, and the two halves are angrily arguing and shoving each other like a cartoon split personality. The dragon-brain breathes a goopy spray of green tadpole brine. Below the vision, the mind flayer Qardsavu’ox (dagger-tentacles) is cowering behind a large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven), shaking his head “nope nope nope.” A tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) points at the crack, taking notes on a tiny scroll. Vivid purples and greens.
Session 117 10
“We Will Dent It With You”
In the crumbling village ruins at sunset, a crowd of mutant humans (extra eyes, lumpy limbs, glowing patches, scrappy armor) stands proudly in front of enormous stacked piles of barrels and crates covered with cartoon bomb symbols and lit-fuse doodles. Their leader, a grizzled mutant with three eyes, raises a fist with a speech bubble: “IF YOU WOULD DENT THE WORLD, WE WILL DENT IT WITH YOU!” Facing them, the party stands ready for war: a tiny kobold paladin (Haru, enlarged veiny skull) with his rapier raised, a dragonborn (Kiet, bird-legs, bloodshot eyes) grinning, an enormous scarred warrior (Gemnar, glaive, red-stone gauntlet) actually almost smiling, and a large, gentle firbolg druid (Toven) with a small grey rat (12) on his shoulder. The mind flayer Qardsavu’ox (dagger-tentacles) peeks nervously out from behind a barrel. In the far distance on the horizon, a menacing glowing pit marks the High Master’s lair. Heroic, rallying, Saturday morning cartoon finale energy.
